Mountain Rwenzori National Park

Mountain Rwenzori National Park is located in the southwestern part of Uganda, on the eastern side of the western African rift valley along Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo in Kasese district.

The park is also known as Ruwenzori, Rwenzururu, and is famous for the Margherita peak, which is Africa’s third-highest snowcapped peak away from the equator. Mountains Rwenzori National Park is the highest non-volcanic mountain in the world and it was gazetted in 1991 and became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, as well as a Ramsar site in 2008.

The mountains are a home to mountain Stanley with 5109 meters, mountain Speke with 4890meters, mountain Baker 4,844meters that make up mountain Rwenzori and it has also got over 20 lakes which are formed as glacier namely lake Mahoma the most accessible and others lake kitandare, lake Bujuku and many more which are an important source to river Nile. And rivers such as Nyamwamba River, Mubuka River, and Ruimi River.

The slopes of the mountain Rwenzori have bamboo forest, tropical forest, and moorlands where mammal species like elephants, chimpanzees, leopards, bush buck, duikers, giant forest hogs, blue monkey, black and white colobus monkey, l’hoest monkey, not to mention a few. Not forgetting the beautiful birds species like Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori Batis, long eared owl, blue headed sunbird, golden winged sunbird, cinnamon chest bee-eater, montane sooty boubou, archer’s robin chat, lagden’s bush shrike, swifts, scarlet tufted malachite sunbird, Rwenzori double collared sunbird, Rwenzori touraco, Johnston’s Rwenzori turaco and many more.

The park’s vegetation zones are from lowland forests to alpine zones which support a wide range of bird species like Golden winged sunbird, Rwenzori turaco, Rwenzori batis, long eared owl, swifts, Montane sooty Bou Bou, Blue headed sunbird, Archer’s robin chat, Grey chested liliopsids, handsome francolin, montane Rwenzori nightjar, montane red faced woodland warbler, red thighed sparrowhawk, Slender billed starling, Red throated Aletha, Regal sunbird, Purple breasted sunbird, Western green tinkerbird, White collared robin, Olive back robin, Strange weaver, Kivu ground thrush, Lagden’s bush shrike, Purple breasted cuckoo shrike and many more.

The park is visited throughout the year, but is best visited during the dry season from June to August and December to February. It offers clear skies, dry trails, and mild temperatures, making it ideal for hiking,

climbing, and wildlife viewing. On the other hand, it’s also visited in the rainy seasons from March to May and September to November, bringing heavy rainfall and muddy trails, making outdoor activities challenging.

How to get there

To get to the mountains, Rwenzori National Park, you can use road or air transport. fly into Entebbe airport near Kampala, Uganda’s capital city, then take a domestic flight to Kasese airstrip, the closest to the park. By road transport, drive west from Kampala to Kasese town, approximately 6-7 hours to the park, as you enjoy the breathtaking scenery. The park has two entrance points, namely Nyakalengija for climbers and hikers, and Kilembe for those interested in hiking and trekking.
